Wisden Cricketers' Almanack 2008
Gilly walks into the sunset
The great Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist retired from international cricket earlier this year. In Wisden 2008 Ian Healy, his predecessor behind the stumps for Australia, paid tribute. Says Healy, 'Gilchrist is a player who should be remembered as even better than his statistics suggest'

Australia lose at home
Until they lost to South Africa recently, Australia had not lost a home series for 16 years, since 1992-93. And that was a close-run thing - West Indies squared the series by winning the Fourth Test at Adelaide by just one run, the narrowest margin in history, then won the final Test at Perth. The series was also notable for Brian Lara's first great Test innings - a majestic 277 in the Third Test at Sydney
