Ambati Rayudu reported for suspect bowling action

by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Ambati Rayudu, the India batsman, has been reported for suspect bowling action during the first ODI between Australia and India in Sydney.

The part-time off-spinner will undergo testing on his action within the next 14 days, but can continue bowling in international cricket during this period till his results are known.

Rayudu sent down just two overs in India’s 34-run loss to Australia in the first ODI, and was quickly taken off by Virat Kohli, the India captain, after he conceded 13 runs in those overs.

However, the ICC, in its release, stated that “the match officials’ report, which was handed over to the India team management, cited concerns about the legality of the 33-year-old off-spinner’s bowling action.”

Rayudu has rarely bowled in international cricket – in his 46 ODIs, he’s bowled in just nine innings, and has a total of three wickets in the format. Despite that, Kohli threw the ball to Rayudu, given Kedar Jadhav – the go-to part-time spinner – was left out of the XI.

Rayudu will be prevented from bowling in international cricket if he is found to flex his elbow beyond the permitted 15 degrees, till he can rectify his action.
