England opener Jason Roy has his eyes set on a return from injury in time for Tuesday’s Cricket World Cup match against Australia, but has refused to offer assurances.

The aggressive opener, who blasted 153 against Bangladesh in his last innings, tore his hamstring whilst fielding in England’s win over West Indies last Friday and has since missed games with Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

“It’s healing pretty well,” Roy Test Match Special. “It’s all good news. I’ll have a scan in a couple of days to make sure everything is going in the right direction.”

James Vince, the Hampshire ace, opened in Roy’s absence against Afghanistan but failed to impress in a game where England set a new ODI record of 25 sixes in an innings. Vince scored an 18-ball 14 against Sri Lanka on Friday.

While Roy is desperately hoping to prove his fitness ahead of the clash against the Aussies, he admits he has to listen to his body and has not pencilled in a date for his return.

“You do think that (you missed out on potential runs), but we (England management) have the bigger picture in mind,” he said. “We have the semi-finals and the final to play for. If you look at it game by game, you can get frustrated, but I don’t do that.”

“It can’t be ‘I’ll definitely be back for this game or that game’, it’s something that we have to manage day by day.”
