Jack Leach replaces Moeen Ali for Lord’s Test

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Moeen Ali has not been included in England’s squad for the second Ashes Test against Australia at Lord’s.

The all-rounder collected match figures of 3-172 in the first Test at Edgbaston and added four runs with the bat, falling to the off-spin of Nathan Lyon in both innings.

Jack Leach, the left-arm spinner, has been included in the 12-man squad in place of Moeen. Leach featured against Ireland last month and was Player of the Match after hitting 92 as a nightwatchman.

James Anderson and Olly Stone – both of whom were in the squad for the first Test – miss out due to injuries, with Jofra Archer expected to play after his successful comeback for Sussex Second XI.

Anderson bowled four overs in the opening Test before leaving the field due to a tight right calf, with a subsequent MRI scan confirming the injury.

Stone will miss the Test after he sustained an injury to his left lower back on Tuesday while training with his county side, Warwickshire, consequently ruling him out of action for two weeks.

The second men’s Ashes Test will begin on August 14 at Lord’s.

Squad: Joe Root (c), Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jack Leach, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes
