England’s first wicket of the second Test in Adelaide carried shades of the first morning here eight years ago.

Chris Woakes effected a direct hit to get rid of Australian opener Cameron Bancroft after a mix-up between him and David Warner.

English fans, who had been watching highlights of the 2010/11 Adelaide Test while the rain fell this morning, were reminded of the moment Jonathan Trott, Woakes’ Warwickshire teammate, had also hit one stump to break the deadlock in the first over of the match – back in December 2010.

That time it was Shane Watson selling the dummy to the unfortunate Simon Katich, who was run out without facing a ball.

Trott’s direct hit from square-leg was followed by a wicket the very next ball as Jimmy Anderson got rid of then skipper Ricky Ponting.

Today it was Warner to blame, after a misfield by Moeen Ali at short cover caused confusion between Australia’s opening pair. While Warner and then Bancroft set off, Woakes collected the ricochet from Moeen at mid-off and paused before throwing down the one stump he could see. Bancroft was out by a distance.

That gave England their first wicket of the day after Joe Root won the toss and inserted Australia on a rain-interrupted first morning.
