Prithvi Shaw has been ruled out of India’s first Test against Australia after suffering a lateral ligament injury while fielding in the Indians’ tour match against Cricket Australia XI.

The 19-year-old opener, who made a 69-ball 66 earlier in the game, rolled his left ankle while attempting a catch at the mid-wicket boundary.

Shaw managed to get under the ball fine, but turned over his ankle in trying to maintain his balance. The youngster was in visible pain after the accident, and had to be carried off the field.

“Shaw underwent scans this morning and the reports revealed a lateral ligament injury. Shaw will be unavailable for the First Test against Australia in Adelaide,” the BCCI said in a statement on Friday, November 30.

“He will undergo an intensive rehabilitation program to hasten the recovery and be available for selection at the earliest.”

Shaw made his international debut in the two-Test home series against the West Indies in October, where he notched up scores of 134, 70 and 33* in three innings.

Considering his blistering form, the youngster was a cinch to open the innings for India in the first Test. However, the doors have now opened for the returning Murali Vijay to open the innings alongside KL Rahul, with wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel a possible alternative.

The first Test will be played at Adelaide Oval from Thursday, December 6.
