Anil Kumble‘s stint as India’s Test captain might have lasted just a year, but Gautam Gambhir feels that the leg-spinner is the best Indian skipper he played under during his 13-year-long international career.

“Yes, MS Dhoni in records point of view, [is] right up there, but yes, for me the best captain I’ve played under is Anil Kumble,” Gambhir told Star Sports Connected.

Kumble, then 37, was named captain at the fag end of his international career in 2007, leading India in 13 Tests until his retirement in October 2008. Gambhir played six of his 58 Tests with Kumble at the helm, one of the six Test captains he played under, the others being Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli.

“Sourav [Ganguly] has done really well [as India captain],” Gambhir said. “One captain that I would have definitely wanted to captain India for a long time is Anil Kumble. I played six Test matches under him probably; he didn’t captain India for that long. Had he captained India for a long time, he would have broken a lot of records.”

Kumble’s time as skipper began with a 1-0 win over Pakistan in a three-Test series, but he could manage only two more wins in the next 11 Tests before he retired from international cricket.
