Shane Warne gave me the belief for Test cricket – Jos Buttler

by Wisden Staff 5 minute read

Jos Buttler has credited Shane Warne with an upsurge in his confidence for the Test format.

The England batsman made his return to the Test side in May off the back of stellar performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where the Australian was his coach at Rajasthan Royals.

And Buttler, who made fifties in both Tests against Pakistan and says he’s in “the form of his life” has paid tribute to the great leg-spinner.

“The real pleasing thing for me was to bring in the same mentality and outlook on the game that I have in white-ball cricket and try and get that into my red-ball game,” he told Wisden.com.

“That’s something Shane Warne was talking to me a lot about out in India during the IPL, about Test match cricket. Why can’t you have the same outlook? You don’t have to play the same shots all the time, but the same method of scoring runs. That’s something I’ve though long and hard about and hopefully I can take it into these forthcoming Test matches like I did in the ones before. ”

Buttler also talked about the impact of Ed Smith’s belief in his capabilities for the Test format, what’s gone right for him in one-day cricket and how he’s approaching the India series. Watch the video above for the full interview.
