Gear review: Sunwise Parade sunglasses

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

A Wisden test run of the Sunwise Parade sunglasses, in white.

The great British weather hasn’t given anyone much call for wearing sunglasses so far. But with the domestic season underway and club cricket in the offing, there’s hope in the air and sunshine breaking through the clouds.

British eyewear manufacturer Sunwise could have just the thing if conditions do reach the heady state of “bright”. They aim to produce high-quality sports sunglasses at a more affordable price point than many competitors, also offering free shipping within the UK.

Recreational players are increasingly aware of potential eye damage caused by the sun and for that reason polarised lenses are increasingly seen as a worthwhile investment. All Sunwise glasses use polarised lenses to filter out damaging light – after that it’s a case of assessing the style, comfort, quality and value.

Style

At the flashier, Aussie-slip-fielder end of things. The chunky frames aren’t overly thick or heavy but look hefty top to bottom, a brilliant white around the eye and a grey-blue on the sizeable arms. The lenses – yellow platinum, designed for strong light – are shiny and golden. All in all, this is a pair of sunglasses that let you know they’re there.

The wraparound is fairly broad at the hinge meaning that, on some faces at least, there’s quite a gap between the arms and the skin. Doesn’t affect your view or comfort, but might not be to your taste, look-wise.

Comfort

With an adjustable rubber nose-pad, they sit comfortably on the face and the flat arms fit snugly on top of the ear, and neatly under a cap. The frames feel light for their size and visual impact.

Quality

The lenses limit the impact of glare whilst also delivering vivid colour contrast, meaning your vision and depth perception is pretty much unaffected – so no excuses for dropped catches! They also promise 100 per cent protection from harmful UV rays.

Physically, the frames are flexible and robust, capable of enduring the odd dive in the field or drop in the kitbag. They feel like they’ll last.

Value

Can’t argue here. Obviously it depends what you’re in to, but Sunwise certainly offer friendlier prices than many other specialist sports eyewear brands. £65 isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s not bad for the technology provided.

Should I pack it in the kitbag?

A decent option if you value eye protection and prefer a bold, brash style.
