England fast bowler Olly Stone has been ruled out of action for a fortnight due to a lower back injury, his county Warwickshire have confirmed.

The quick sustained the injury to his left lower back during a training session in Edgbaston, on Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s really disappointing for Olly that he’s been ruled out of action for such an important two weeks of cricket because of a reoccurrence of his back injury,” sport director and ex-England coach Paul Farbrace said in a statement.

Stone was part of the England squad for the first Ashes Test but did not make the playing XI. The injury rules him out of the second Test, joining a long list of injured English pacers. 

James Anderson, who bowled just four overs in the first game owing to a calf injury, has been ruled out of the second Test. Jofra Archer is bidding to be fit after a side strain sustained during the World Cup, although he claimed a six-for and hit a speedy hundred for Sussex Second XI on Tuesday. Mark Wood has also been ruled out of the Ashes with a side and knee injury.

The 25-year-old Stone suffered a stress fracture earlier this year, which forced him out of England’s tour of the Caribbean. In his solitary Test thus far, against Ireland last month, Stone took three wickets.

“At the moment there’s a bit of inflammation, but he will undergo a scan later this afternoon so that we know the full course of treatment that he can undertake with the club’s medical team and with the support of the ECB,” Farbrace added.

“In the meantime, he needs to rest up before he can get his body strong again and is ready to deal with the demands of being a fast bowler.”
