Suresh Raina points out the difference between Virat Kohli & Sachin Tendulkar

by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Suresh Raina, the India all-rounder, believes the main difference between Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli is the latter’s hunger for victories.

Tendulkar was India’s talisman in his day, breaking all sorts of run-scoring records, including notching up an unprecedented 100 international centuries. However, Kohli has taken over the mantle, and has been so prolific with the bat over the last decade that he may well topple Tendulkar’s records if he continues in the same vein.

However, Raina, who has played alongside both Tendulkar and Kohli, said as prolific as the two are, their attitudes were different. “Sachin and Virat, they both score lot of hundreds,” Raina told Khaleej Times in an interview. “Virat wants to win every game. And Sachin wants to make sure everything is very calm.

“With Sachin, it’s always about his calmness. It was because of Sachin that we won the [2011] World Cup. He was the guy who made everyone in the team believe that we can do that. He was like the second coach in the team.

“And Virat, he has been amazing in all formats. He has been a very good captain. He has been hitting the ball very well. He is very fit, very positive, and he has the aura around him. I am glad I have played with both of them.”
