India lose 17th men's ODI toss in a row

In the second ODI against Australia at the Adelaide Oval, home skipper Mitchell Marsh called the coin toss correctly, and elected to field first. Marsh had won the toss in the first ODI on Sunday as well.

This extended a remarkable run of luck (or lack thereof) with the coin for India in men's ODIs. They have now lost 17 in a row, with their last win coming on November 15, 2023, in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.

The chances of losing 17 tosses in a row are extremely small; a 1 in 131,072 chance or in other words, a 0.00076 per cent chance of happening. This streak spans three captains – Rohit Sharma (12), KL Rahul (3) and Shubman Gill (2). Rohit's last match as India's ODI captain was the 2025 Champions Trophy final, and that saw him equal the world record for most consecutive tosses lost by a single captain.
