The match will act as the senior side's only preparation for the highly anticipated series, while it will be one of four multi-day matches played by the Lions. Having only one warm-up game scheduled for the series – labelled by Brendon McCullum "the biggest of all of our lives" – has drawn some criticism for falling short of proper preparation.

However, it follows the pattern of England's recent series in Australia and is in part a result of the history of weak warm-up sides being trotted out by home boards as warm-up opposition for travelling teams. Ahead of the 2021/22 Ashes series, England played two friendlies against the Lions. Before that, they played four different friendlies against Australian opposition before and during both the 2013/14 and 2017/18 series'.

The three day match will begin on Thursday (November 13) and end a week before the first Test gets underway in Perth.
