Hayley Matthews hit her tenth ODI hundred in a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Wednesday (February 25).
Hayley Matthews equals Laura Wolvaardt's ODI record
With the series already lost, the West Indies skipper restored some pride with a 119-ball 100 in a 218-run chase. She received able support from former captain Stafanie Taylor, who completed 6000 runs in ODIs, Chinelle Henry and Deandra Dottin, as they reached home with four overs and six wickets to spare at the National Cricket Stadium in St George's, Grenada.
With the ton, Matthews joined Laura Wolvaardt as the batter with centuries against most different teams in WODIs – eight. The West Indies great has hit hundreds against South Africa, Pakistan (thrice), New Zealand, Ireland, India, Bangladesh, Scotland and Sri Lanka.
Meg Lanning, Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine have hit hundreds against seven different opponents, while Taylor, Chamari Athapaththu, Tammy Beaumont, Smriti Mandhana and Tazmin Brits have tons against six teams each.
Sri Lanka batted first, but were pegged back immediately, with Matthews trapping her counterpart, Chamari Athapaththu, leg before on the fourth ball of the game. Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama stabilised the innings, adding 43 runs for the second wicket, before Matthews returned to remove the former.
Samarawickrama maintained her form, adding 78 runs for the third wicket with Vishmi Gunaratne and completing her fifty in the process. She was eventually dismissed in the 35th over with Sri Lanka at 133. Even as wickets continued tumbling down at the other end, Kavisha Dilhari remained unbeaten at 45 off 58 as her side finished at 217-7 in 50 overs.
West Indies were also off to a disappointing start, with Qiana Joseph and Shemaine Campbell falling within five overs with 12 runs on the board. That was when Matthew was joined by Taylor in the middle, and the experienced duo constructed a 124-run partnership. The skipper would go on to complete her tenth ODI hundred before getting dismissed in the 37th over for a 119-ball 100.
Dottin and Henry ensured there were no more hiccups, taking the team home with an unbeaten 49-run stand. West Indies still went down 2-1 in the ODI series, and the two sides will now face off in a three-game T20I rubber.
