The Blaze and Surrey played out a thrilling tie in the ECB Women's One-Day Cup on Wednesday (May 14), setting a new world record.
In the 27th game of the competition's inaugural season, the two sides – who have had contrasting fortunes in the tournament so far – faced off at Beckenham – the Blaze had won four out of six games, while Surrey had lost four out of six until that point.
Surrey stand-in skipper Kira Chathli chose to field first, as the Blaze's Amy Jones (80) and Kathryn Bryce (56) put on 113 for the second wicket, overcoming the early loss of Tammy Beaumont. No.5 Georgia Elwiss put the innings in overdrive, scoring 82 off 67 balls after coming in in the 26th over to power her side to 346-9.

In the chase, Sophia Dunkley (20) and Danni Wyatt-Hodge (43) put together a 57-run opening partnership, and several batters got starts, building around No.3 Alice Capsey's brisk 125, off just 96 balls – her maiden List A century.
Surrey were reduced to 227-7, before Ryana MacDonald-Gay stuck around to put on 65 with Capsey for the eighth wicket. But the pair were dismissed within eight balls of each other to leave Surrey 307-9 in 45.1 overs.
No.10 Alexa Stonehouse then took over, hitting two sixes and five fours, including a boundary off the first ball of the final over, when Surrey needed another nine runs to win. Last batter Dani Gregory managed two singles of her own to bring the equation down to two needed off one ball. She then dug out a yorker from Grace Ballinger, managing to sneak in a single as the bowler misfielded – resulting in a tie.
With both sides locked at 346-9, this is now the highest-scoring tie in women's List A history. The only other match which ended in a tie after both teams scored over 300 was Delhi v Mumbai in the Inter State Women's One Day Competition in December 2024 (321-7 v 321-5). Mumbai won that match in a Super Over to progress to the semi-final.
Had Surrey managed to get over the line, it would have been the second-highest chase in women's List A cricket.
