Marnus Labuschagne was dismissed for a duck in Queensland’s first innings against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield, continuing his indifferent first-class form.

There were question marks over Marnus Labuschagne’s place in the side ahead of the 2025/26 Ashes, with a string of low Test scores. From January 2024 till the start of the Ashes, Labuschagne had made 561 runs in 24 Test innings without a single hundred. It led to him being dropped from the XI for the West Indies tour, with questions circulating over his place for the series against England as well.

However, he made a return to the Ashes side after impressing in domestic cricket. He made 160 and 159 in consecutive matches at the start of the Sheffield season, along with another fifty to emerge as the man in form heading into the series. However, the Ashes ended up below par for him: He made 298 runs in 12 innings at 27.09, with a high score of 65.

He ended 2025 with 271 runs from 15 innings at an average of 20.84, the lowest by an Australia top four batter in a calendar year since 1981.

Marnus Labuschagne’s poor FC form continues

The 31-year-old has returned to play for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield, but has been unable to replicate his run from the start of the season. He made 10 off 19 against Victoria in the first innings, before scoring a patient 89-ball 41 in the second. Against South Australia, at Brisbane, Labuschagne managed eight and two, while he was out for no score against Western Australia in the ongoing clash.
