Mitchell Swepson picked up seven wickets for 28 runs in Queensland’s One-Day Cup win over South Australia at the Gabba on Saturday (February 21).
Batting first in a crucial game, Queensland were powered by skipper Marnus Labuschagne’s hundred to finish at 260 all out in 49.2 overs. This was Labuschagne’s fourth hundred in the ongoing season of the List A tournament in just six games.
South Australia’s chase didn’t start as planned, with Jack Wildermuth drawing first blood in the second over by removing Jake Fraser-McGurk. Mackenzie Harvey and Alex Carey steadied the ship, adding 80 runs for the second wicket, and had the side well placed at 82-1 in the 13th over.
Mitchell Swepson breaks Queensland record with maiden List A five-for
Swepson, brought on to break the threatening stand, struck in his first over to dismiss Carey caught and bowled. Harvey upped the ante following Carey’s departure, hitting a six and a four off Swepson’s next over, but the leg spinner returned strongly, dismissing Nathan McSweeney in his third over.
He then dismissed both Jake Lehmann and Liam Scott in his fourth over to reduce South Australia to 110-5 and make it three wickets in five deliveries for himself. Labuschagne kept the leggie on, who trapped Jason Sangha leg before in his next over to complete a maiden List A five-for.
After an odd wicketless over, Swepson bowled Nathan McAndrew and had Harvey, who scored a 66-ball 72, caught by Michael Neser in his following two overs to bowl out South Australia for 135 and finish with figures of 28-7 in 7.1 overs. The excellent outing put him second on the list of the highest wicket-takers of the 2025/26 One-Day Cup with 15, behind Tanveer Sangha (18). Swepson has played four Tests, three ODIs and eight T20Is for Australia but has not donned national colours since 2022.
The leg-spinner’s figures were the third-best in Australia’s domestic one-day competition and the best-ever for Queensland in the competition. He broke Carl Rackemann’s 37-year-old record; the former right-arm pacer had registered figures of 7-34 against South Australia in the 1988-89 season.
