Australia have named a 17-player squad for a three-T20I series against Pakistan, starting January 29.
David, Cummins and Hazlewood miss out on Pakistan tour
Tim David, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood miss out as they continue on their road to recovery ahead of the T20 World Cup. Glenn Maxwell and Nathan Ellis, too, have not been named as part of workload management, while the remaining 10 from the 15-member squad for the World Cup have all been picked.
Two uncapped players – Perth Scorchers pacer Mahli Beardman (eight wickets at 30.25) and Sydney Sixers all-rounder Jack Edwards (15 wickets at 18.33) – have been called up on the back of remarkable BBL seasons. Beardman was also named for the T20I series against India in October-November 2025, while Edwards received a call-up for the final match of the preceding ODI series.
Notably, Edwards was signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026 auction for INR 3 crore. Meanwhile, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Mitch Owen, Josh Phillippe and Matt Renshaw have all been picked for the Pakistan tour but aren’t part of the World Cup squad.
Australia's Chair of Selectors, George Bailey addressed the absence of David, Hazlewood and Cummins, saying:
"TD [David] had a very minor setback, I think last week, so didn't quite get through a running session that he was hoping to, but has since been cleared of any damage. It was just, I think, on the back of a heavy week. So he's still tracking for the start of the tournament. Josh is in the same boat and Pat's a little bit different ... he'll probably join that World Cup group a little bit later in the tournament, around game three or four."
Players currently involved in the BBL will join the team in Pakistan after the culmination of their respective franchise’s campaigns. All three games of the series will be played at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, on January 29, 31 and February 1.
