The two teams are meeting for the first time since the World Test Championship final, where South Africa defeated Australia by five wickets after Aiden Markram’s 136 helped the Proteas chase down 282 runs in the fourth innings. That victory marked South Africa’s first ICC title in 27 years.
Australia enter the T20I series on the back of a 5-0 clean sweep against West Indies, while South Africa participated in a tri-series in Zimbabwe that also involved New Zealand. In the final, they fell short by just three runs against New Zealand after a dramatic last over, where the Blackcaps’ fielding effort took centre stage.
The last time the two teams met in a bilateral T20I series in September 2023, Australia clean-swept South Africa 3-0. In head-to-head encounters, Australia clearly hold an edge over their rivals, winning 17 matches compared to South Africa’s eight.
