Surrey were awarded five penalty runs after Yorkshire opener Lauren Winfield-Hill 'showed serious dissent' following being given out caught behind for 60.
Surrey awarded penalty after Lauren Winfield-Hill's dissent
Winfield-Hill had reached a half-century after a lengthy rain delay at The Oval in the second round of Women's One-Day Cup fixtures, when she was given out to a short-ball from Maitlan Brown. Despite muted appeal from the Surrey players, umpire James Tredwell raised his finger.
Upon seeing Tredwell had given her out, Winfield-Hill immediately gestured towards her head, signalling that the ball had hit her helmet on the way through rather than her bat, which was confirmed by replays. However, with no review technology available in domestic cricket, Winfield-Hill had to leave the field. She turned and appeared to say something to the umpires on her way off.
As next batter, Maddie Ward, came to the crease, there was a short delay as she prepared to face her first delivery. Brown was ready to bowl her next delivery, but the umpires halted play before she began her run-up to have a discussion. It was not clear what the umpires were discussing, but after Brown had bowled her next delivery, it was confirmed that Surrey had been awarded five penalty runs, and would start their chase on 5-0.
Under MCC Law 42, Level Two breaches of the Player Code of Conduct can result in an immediate five-run penalty to the offending players' side, with Level One offences requiring a warning be given by the umpires before the penalty. Law 42.3.1 states that "showing serious dissent at an umpire’s decision by word or action," constitutes a Level Two offence.
At the time of Winfield-Hill's dismissal, Yorkshire were 131-2, before a collapse saw them slip to 185-7. Following her dismissal, Winfield-Hill had a full concussion assessment.
