The Melbourne Renegades pulled off a dramatic four-wicket win over the Hobart Hurricanes in the WBBL after a rare no-ball on the final delivery overturned what had appeared to be a Super Over finish.
With scores level, Deandra Dottin failed to connect with a good-length delivery from Nicola Carey on the last ball of the innings. Wicketkeeper Lizelle Lee collected the ball behind the stumps for what seemed like a dot ball, sending the game into a Super Over.
However, the on-field umpires decided to refer a possible stumping to the TV umpire, even as Carey’s teammates came over to congratulate her on a superb final delivery.
“The scores are level, and we are going to a Super Over,” the commentator confidently declared. “They’re checking for a stumping, but it would still be the same result, wouldn’t it? A wicket is a dot.” However, a plot twist followed.
“Cricket is cruel.” We thought we had a Super Over, but it’s the @RenegadesBBL who claim victory over the @HurricanesBBL in extraordinary fashion! #WBBL12 https://t.co/fIrkS0rIQw

A bizarre ending to the WBBL clash
During the review, it was revealed that Lee had collected the ball with her gloves in front of the stumps. This resulted in a no-ball under MCC Law 27.3, which governs the position of the wicketkeeper: “The wicket-keeper shall remain wholly behind the wicket at the striker’s end from the instant of the bowler’s delivery until a ball delivered by the bowler touches the bat or person of the striker or passes the wicket at the striker’s end or the striker attempts a run. In the event of the wicket-keeper contravening this Law, the striker’s end umpire shall call and signal No ball as soon as applicable after the delivery of the ball.”

As Lee was not wholly behind the wicket when the ball passed the striker’s end, the delivery was called a no-ball.
The decision handed the Renegades victory, with an extra run being added to their total by the no ball, leaving Carey and the Hurricanes stunned.
