August 14: Today’s latest cricket news

Australia trio ruled out of South Africa ODIs

Mitchell Owen, Lance Morris, and Matt Short have been ruled out of Australia's squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. Owen suffered a concussion after being hit on the head by a Kagiso Rabada bouncer in the second T20I; Morris reported back soreness; while Short has failed to recover from his side strain.

The three players have been replaced by Aaron Hardie, Matt Kuhnemann, and Cooper Connolly.

Middlesex complete record 388-run chase in One-Day Cup

Middlesex chased down 388 against Durham on Wednesday (August 13), making it the highest successful List A run-chase in England, and the fourth highest in the history of the format, worldwide. South Africa's David Bedingham scored a 65-ball hundred for Durham, but former England opener Sam Robson's 169 not out trumped Bedingham's efforts.

Josh Tongue dismisses Steve Smith in second Hundred three-wicket haul

The England Test seamer continued his fine form at The Hundred, following up his 3-29 in the last game which included wickets of David Warner and Kane Williamson with 3-25 against Welsh Fire on Wednesday (August 13). In this spell, he got rid of Steve Smith, who he also dismissed twice on Test debut during the 2023 Ashes.

Jhye Richardson in race against time to be fit for Ashes 2025

The 28-year-old Australia seamer's career has been plagued by injuries. Last year, he suffered a shoulder dislocation while attempting to high-five a teammate during a Sheffield Shield game, which required him to undergo a shoulder surgery. Speaking at an event to mark 100 days to go for the Ashes, Richardson said the recovery progress has been slow and there's a lot of "water to go under the bridge before the Ashes".

"We're hitting the milestones that we planned out at the start and while it has been really slow, things are looking good," he said. "As nice as it would be [to play in the Ashes], there is a lot of water to go under the bridge before then. We're not counting out Ashes cricket, but there's a long process that has started and has been ongoing and there is a lot to go through before then. Things are looking good for the summer and I should be up and ready to go."
