England have announced their ODI and T20I squads for September's white-ball series against South Africa and Ireland.
Jacob Bethell set to become England's youngest-ever men's captain vs Ireland
Following their 2-2 draw with India in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, England’s next home assignment features two white-ball series. They will first play three ODIs and three T20Is against South Africa (September 2–7), followed by three additional T20Is against the same opponent (September 10–14). The team will then travel to Malahide for three T20Is against Ireland.
The home ODIs and T20Is against South Africa mark Harry Brook’s second stint since taking up full-time white-ball captaincy. In his preceding ODIs and T20Is against the West Indies, England achieved a 6-0 cross-format clean sweep.
Rehan Ahmed has been rewarded for his sensational all-round form across domestic formats. His last appearance for England came in October 2024, during the Test series in Pakistan. With the joint-most centuries in this season’s County Championship, the wrist spinner could translate his newly found batting potential into an Ashes berth.
For the Ireland T20Is, England have rested their all-format Test players, naming a squad led by promising Jacob Bethell. The all-rounder is set to become England’s youngest-ever men’s international captain, surpassing Monty Bowden’s record (23 years, 144 days) set during England’s 1888/89 Test tour of South Africa.
Sonny Baker receives maiden England call-up
Hampshire fast bowler Sonny Baker has received his first senior England call-up following impressive performances across formats. The 22-year-old made his mark during England Lions' 2024-25 tour of Australia, claiming match figures of 4-43, 1-28 and 3-60 in his three appearances.
Baker has maintained strong form this season, taking four wickets at 23.50 in The Hundred, eight wickets at 26.12 in the T20 Blast, and 19 County Championship wickets at 36.10 - including two five-wicket hauls that demonstrated his growing threat with the red ball.
