The ICC's annual update to the men's ODI team rankings was released on Monday (May 11). Here's how it has helped Bangladesh with regards to qualifying for the 2027 World Cup.

What are the changes after the ICC men's ODI rankings annual update?

This year's update to the rankings removed results achieved by teams prior to April 30, 2023. Additionally, results achieved between May 1, 2024 and April 30, 2025 switched from a 100 per cent to 50 per cent weightage, meaning teams could move up or down without playing any matches. One result of this change saw South Africa and Pakistan switch places in fourth and fifth. India lost one rating point, but remained on top of the standings.

Further down the table, both England (8th) and Bangladesh (9th) gained a rating point each, while West Indies (10th) lost three rating points. None of them changed positions in the table, but Bangladesh are now ten points ahead of West Indies, compared to six earlier. This has ramifications for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

How does qualification for the 2027 World Cup work?

Full Member hosts (South Africa and Zimbabwe here), along with the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings as of March 31, 2027, will qualify automatically for the tournament. At present, this means the top nine teams in the rankings, since South Africa are fourth and Zimbabwe are 12th.

Ninth is currently occupied by Bangladesh, so their lead over the West Indies being extended is only good news for them from a qualification point of view. Eighth-placed England will also have been relieved to see that their lead over Bangladesh was maintained.

Of course, there is no guarantee these rankings will hold until March 31, with a good amount of cricket left to play. But ten ranking points is a significant gap for the West Indies to make up. Champions of the first two editions of the ODI World Cup, it now looks as though they could be consigned to the Qualifier for the second tournament in a row.

There is no guarantee of securing one of the four berths available via the Qualifier, either. For the 2023 World Cup, two slots were available through the Qualifier – taken by Sri Lanka and Netherlands – and West Indies finished fifth at that event, behind Scotland and Zimbabwe as well.
