The opening game of the 2026-27 Big Bash League (BBL) season between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will be played in Chennai on December 12.

BBL moves 2026-27 opener to Chennai to drive up league's global appeal

The MA Chidambaram Stadium will host the historic fixture, with Cricket Australia aiming for a sell-out crowd of 38,000 and expect it to be the most-watched match in BBL history. In what would be the tournament’s first game overseas, the Renegades will play as the home side and the match is scheduled to start at 2.40pm IST (8.10pm AEDT, 5.10pm AWST, 10.10am UK time).

Alistair Dobson, CA's Executive General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, explained that the season opener in India will drive up the league's global appeal as they try to tap into the world's biggest cricket market. "Every league or competition has their own unique strengths," he said. "We think the BBL has its own unique flavour that we want to bring and hopefully people seeing it up close in their own backyard only strengthens that interest in the competition."

“Our sport has such an authentic connection in India,” Dobson further added. “This game is also part of a much bigger initiative across both our governments and shows that cricket is a connector for both our countries, and that both the Australian and Indian governments see that and want to be part of it. “We're hugely excited by the opportunity and we expect the match will be the most-watched game in Australian domestic league history for any sport.”

Australia prime minister Anthony Albanese and India PM Narendra Modi, at the MCG on Friday, July 10, made the official announcement that the BBL 2026-27 opener will be played in Chennai. Australia's Consul-General based in Chennai, Silai Zaki, backed the BBL's opener move to the MA Chidambaram Stadium, along with the BCCI.

Interestingly, defending BBL champions Perth Scorchers have previously played in India when they featured in the now-defunct Champions League T20. This will be the first time the Renegades will play in India, however. Dobson explained that the Renegades were picked as the home team because of their flexible schedule for the upcoming BBL season even as there was interest from all other sides.
