England have crumbled but that doesn’t mean social media can’t lift our spirits. Peter Miller compiles the best cricket quotes, instas and tweets from social media this week.

DRS giving people the ‘ump’

The umpires in Adelaide contributed mixed performances; there were some great decisions and some absolute stinkers. That’s why the Decision Review System exists. As lbw decisions were given one way or another, several tweeters questioned the system. Our favourite was this beauty from Australia’s Cameron White.

On the more erudite side of the debate, former England all-rounder Dimi Mascarenhas was asking serious questions about the reversal of Joe Root’s dismissal in England’s second innings.

New Zealand’s Jimmy Neesham wasn’t having that. In a way only cricket’s greatest tweeter can manage, the Kiwi blew that argument apart.

Flying Lyon

While the DRS chat gave us the belligerent side of Twitter, Nathan Lyon gave us the creative aspect. When Lyon got the wicket of Moeen Ali in the first innings, he did so with an absolutely cracking caught and bowled. Some of the images of it are just stunning.

Now, those pictures are great, but this is the real winner. Michelangelo himself could have done no better.

The 2017/18 Ashes has been dominated by the bad blood between both teams. At times, it’s made the rift between Katy Perry and Taylor Swift look rather tame.

But Trevor Bayliss has a solution: Turn off the stump mics so no one can hear the nasty comments. He appears to have abandoned all hope that the players could just stop being horrid to one-another.

Instagram of the week

Of course, it is Chris Gayle again. Here he is on a camel.

Throwback of the week

In a desperate bid to reacquaint ourselves with hope, here’s Test Match Special commentary on the only time England have won a Test in Perth. It was against an Australian team severely weakened by Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket. So you’re telling me there’s a chance? …

We’ll be back with more social media stories next week.
