Following their 2-1 win against South Africa, New Zealand are at the top of the 2025-2029 ICC Women’s Championship table.
How many teams will play in the 2029 Women’s World Cup?
In 2029, the Women’s World Cup will expand to 10 teams, up from the eight-team editions in the 21st century. In fact, the number of teams is more than any other edition except the 11 of 1997.
The 2025-2029 ICC Women’s Championship will serve as the qualifiers for the tournament, with the top seven teams, plus the hosts, automatically qualifying for the Women's World Cup 2029. The remaining three teams will play in a World Cup qualifier. Since the hosts have not been named, it is not clear at this point which team(s) will qualify directly.
The Women’s Championship has expanded to 11 teams this time, with the inclusion of Zimbabwe. Each team will play eight three-match series in this cycle – four home, four away. On April 2, Australia completed a 3-0 sweep of the West Indies, while on April 4, New Zealand won the decider to clinch the South Africa series 2-1.
With 10 points in four games, New Zealand are now at the top of the points table, but second-placed Australia have a cent per cent win record. Bangladesh, England, India, and Ireland are yet to start their campaigns.
