Shreyas Iyer, India's new T20I captain

India announces squads for upcoming T20I assignments against Ireland and England, along with the 2026 Asian Games. The selection committee has also named India A squad for multi-day matches against Sri Lanka.

After more than two months of speculation around Suryakumar Yadav’s future with the Indian national team, the Indian team selection committee has anointed Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain.

Passing on the baton from SKY to Iyer

After nearly two years as India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav bows out with a perfect record of winning or drawing every bilateral series he has captained in his stint. Along with the good record in bilaterals, Suryakumar also led India to the Asia Cup win in September 2025, followed by a successful defense of the T20 World Cup trophy, which proved to be his last assignment with the Men in Blue as skipper.

While Surya’s captaincy record is spotless, the same cannot be said about his batting form during the period. After playing a knock of 75 off 35 against Bangladesh in October 2024, the Mumbai Indians batter didn’t hit a half-century for almost 15 months in T20Is, till New Zealand toured India ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Shreyas Iyer, who has been omitted from India’s T20I plans for the last two years, makes a deserved comeback after impressing everyone with his fine form and captaincy skills during the last three seasons of the IPL. Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title, followed by a runners-up finish with Punjab Kings in 2025, and another impressive campaign for him personally followed in 2026, which has finally convinced the selectors of his pedigree.

India finally hand maiden call-up to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi captured everyone’s imagination in IPL 2025 as he enjoyed a breakout season with Rajasthan Royals. Winning the Emerging Player of the Season Award, Super Striker of the Season, Super Sixes of the Season, Most Valuable Player, and the Orange Cap in a single season was a feat that broke the door down for the 15-year old who might become the youngest debutant for India in a month’s time.

The RR opening batter not only scored the most sixes in IPL 2026, he also broke Chris Gayle’s long-standing record of most sixes in a single IPL season (59) and eclipsed it comfortably (72 sixes). The mental temperament of facing quality international bowlers and being unfazed against them has only helped Sooryavanshi’s stock rise in the international circuit even before his debut.
