Lord's pitch for ENG v NZ

MCC has issued a statement on the much-discussed pitch for the recently concluded Lord’s Test match between England and New Zealand.

MCC acknowledges Lord’s pitch had “too much variable bounce”

The Test match between England and New Zealand – the first of the English summer of 2026 – was the 150th at the Lord’s Cricket Ground: the historic venue became the first to reach this milestone.

However, soon after Tom Latham won the toss and opted to field, it became evident that the pitch was not the easiest to bat on. Despite Matt Henry’s injury, the New Zealand fast bowlers put on a brilliant show to bowl out England for 140. Ollie Robinson then hit back, striking thrice in four balls in his first over in Test cricket in more than two years. New Zealand, 61-6 at stumps, folded for 113 in the second morning.

However, concerns were already raised over the pitch after some balls took off the surface and some came unusually low. On the second day, Henry bowled Jacob Bethell with a ball that barely rose despite pitching short of a good length. After rain washed out almost the entirety of the third day, England won the 115 runs on the fourth morning.

Of the 150 Tests at Lord’s, this was the second-shortest decided match. At 996 balls, this was longer than only the 792-ball Ashes Test of 1888.

“We recognise that the pitch for this Test has shown more variable bounce than we would have wanted,” ran an MCC post shortly after the Test match. “We hold ourselves to the highest standards and are naturally frustrated when a surface falls short of those expectations.”

Mentioning their significant annual investments “in the preparation of the main square at Lord’s, as well as in research, technology and expertise aimed at producing pitches that provide a fair and consistent contest between bat and ball,” the MCC explained what might have led to the variable bounce: “The unusually hot and dry weather during May, followed by wetter conditions in the lead-up to the match, presented a number of challenges in preparing the pitch.”

They concluded by adding that they “fully recognise the need to act quickly” and assured that they would “remain fully focused on applying all aspects of pitch development and improvement as outlined in our recently published MCC Cricket Strategy 2026-29”.
