What Is Major League Cricket?
America’s main T20 competition started in 2023, with this year being its third edition. It features six franchise teams, three of which are owned by IPL franchises, with the teams hailing from Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Texas and Washington.
The tournament consistently features some of the best T20 players in the world, with Nicholas Pooran set to captain MI New York this year, and Glenn Maxwell set to captain Washington Freedom. Heinrich Klaasen will head up Seattle Orcas, who are coached by former England white-ball coach Matthew Mott.
However, the league this year will be without some of the highest profile names it attracted last year, with Pat Cummins, Travis Head and Kagiso Rabada all unavailable due to a combination of the World Test Championship final and workload management. Rashid Khan will also reportedly miss this year's tournament, opting to rest after a disappointing IPL season.
Last season saw Washington Freedom and San Francisco Unicorns finish comfortably above the rest in the round-robin stage, where each team plays seven games. Excellent innings' in the qualifier and final from Travis Head and Steve Smith respectively saw Washington Freedom emerge victorious, winning a one-sided final by 96 runs. 2023’s champions, MI New York, finished in fourth place whilst the runners up, the Seattle Orcas, finished in sixth.
MLC 2025: What Are The Venues?
There will be two new venues hosting matches in the tournament this season, in addition to the usual hosts Grand Prairie Stadium and Church Street Park. Broward County Stadium in South Florida will host nine games, including a doubleheader on July 4, and the iconic Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum will be adapted to host nine games at the start of the tournament.
