Tim Robinson scores career-best 130 against Sri Lanka A
Robinson, one of New Zealand’s T20I openers, scored 130 batting at No.3 to improve on his previous first-class top score of 108. Opener Curtis Heaphy scored a ton as well, with New Zealand A going past the home side’s first-innings total of 381 on day three.
Sri Lanka A batted first in Hambantota. Openers Lahiru Udara and Nishan Madushka gave them a decent start, adding 46 runs together before the latter fell. Udara went on to complete his fifty while constructing a 56-run stand with Nuwanidu Fernando to put Sri Lanka A in a commanding position at 102-1.
But they lost three wickets for the next 45 runs and were five down for 192, staring at the possibility of folding under 300. However, a hundred from all-rounder Sonal Dinusha, his 11th in first-class cricket, took the team past 300. He added 102 runs with No.7 Ramesh Mendis and another 58 with No.9 Isitha Wijesundara as Sri Lanka A finished their innings at 381.
In reply, New Zealand A lost captain and opener Rhys Mariu in the eighth over. But Robinson and Heaphy dug deep and ensured their side didn’t lose another wicket on the second day. The Black Caps batter brought up his fourth first-class ton in the process and was batting at 101*, while Heaphy was at 75, at stumps on day two, with New Zealand at 199-1.
Robinson went on to make his career-best score in the format, dismissed for 130, after having added 218 runs for the second wicket with Heaphy, who went on to complete his fifth FC ton, and had gone past 150 at the time of writing.
The New Zealand A side are currently on a tour to Sri Lanka. The home side won the three-match unofficial ODI series 3-0, while the first of the two first-class games is currently underway in Hambantota. The second four-day match will be played in Galle, starting April 23.
