Pakistan’s Salman Ali Agha was run out in bizarre circumstances after he bent over to return the ball to the bowler without first reaching his crease, during the second Bangladesh ODI.

Pakistan were asked to bat first at Dhaka by Bangladesh, with the hosts seeking a victory to seal the series following a comfortable win in the opening match. They got off to a fine start, with openers Sahibzada Farhan (31) and Maaz Sadaqat (75) putting together 103 runs in 12.5 overs. Pakistan lost three quick wickets and soon became 122-3, when Mohammad Rizwan and Agha joined hands.

The duo steadied the ship, taking the score over the 230-run mark by the 38th over, as a score of 300 looked on the cards. Agha, the more aggressive of the two batters, was batting on 64 and looked set for his third ODI ton when a moment of harakiri led to his dismissal.

Salman Ali Agha dismissed in bizarre fashion

The incident occurred during the third ball of the 39th over, when Mehidy Hasan Miraz sent down a good-length ball to Rizwan, who was on 44 at that point. The wicketkeeper tapped it back to the bowler, who moved to his right to pick up the ball. However, he ended up colliding with Agha, who, without realising he was out of his crease, bent down to pick up the ball instead.

However, Miraz was quick on his feet: he picked up the ball before Agha and flicked it towards the stumps at the non-striker’s end, where Agha was found to be outside his crease. The decision was referred to the third umpire, who ruled Agha out, much to his dismay.

The T20I skipper was not pleased at the mode of dismissal: He first gestured to Miraz while he was appealing, who nonchalantly pointed out that he was outside the crease when the stumps were broken. When the TV umpire’s decision was displayed, Agha threw down his helmet in anger - an act that could land him in trouble for abuse of equipment. He could also be seen throwing his helmet near the boundary rope as he walked back, while muttering a few words.

Rizwan was also seen in an animated discussion with the Bangladesh fielders, even as commentator Ramiz Raja questioned the “sportsmanship” of the Bangladesh team.

The incident led to a collapse for Pakistan. Following the 109-run stand, Pakistan lost their last six wickets for 43 runs and were all out for 274.
