Sons of Alistair Campbell, Matthew and Jonathan, scored a fifty each in Zimbabwe’s premier first-class tournament Logan Cup, on Sunday (February 15).
Campbell brothers both hit fifties to take Southern Rocks to huge first-innings total
Lining up for Southern Rocks against Matabeleland Tuskers, Matthew opened the innings and scored a patient 121-ball 58 after losing his partner for just 22 runs. He was part of a crucial stand with captain Roy Kaia for the third wicket as the duo added 115 runs together after the Rocks had lost two quick wickets.
Johnathan, meanwhile, walked out after his brother’s dismissal, with the side at 146-3. He went on to score 91 off 118, featuring 14 fours, during a 170-run stand with the skipper. Even as the former fell with the team at 316, Kaia went about his business and eventually fell just three runs short of his double hundred.
He added 78 runs with No.7 Richmond Mutumbami, who also hit a half-century, before getting dismissed for 197. The remaining four wickets came at a cost of just 41 runs as the Rocks were bowled out for 458, with Mutumbani remaining unbeaten at 55.
Kaia notably has three Zimbabwe Test caps under his belt, two against Pakistan and one against Bangladesh, all of which came in 2021. Johnathan, on the other hand, has played nine T20Is, three ODIs and a Test. Matthew hasn’t played international cricket.
The Campbell brothers also bowled in the second innings, with Matthew picking up a wicket on the first ball after lunch on Day 3 to reduce the Tuskers to 119-5. Johnathan, meanwhile, had bowled four overs until then without picking up a wicket.
The duo have had a decent Logan Cup campaign so far, with Johnathan currently the third-highest run-getter with 299 runs in five games at 42.71, including three fifties and a top score of 95. Matthew, meanwhile, has 149 runs at 21.28, with a top score of 58. They have also picked up two wickets apiece so far in the tournament.
Riding on the all-round performances, the Rocks are second in the league table after four rounds of games, having won two and drawn two matches so far.
