South Africa have revealed their 15-member squad for the Test series against India in November.
Temba Bavuma returns to the squad
The major takeaway from the squad announcement is the return of South Africa captain Temba Bavuma after an injury layoff. Bavuma sustained a calf strain while fielding in an ODI against England in September and has been out of action since.
He will not play in the upcoming white-ball series against Pakistan. Instead, to have some game time, he is scheduled to feature for a South Africa A side in a first-class match against India A in Bengaluru preceding the Test series.
Bavuma's return to the Test squad means David Bedingham misses out on selection. Bedingham, who made a solid start to his Test career with a half-century against India, scored his first hundred against New Zealand in February. After his first four Tests, he was averaging 49.57. However, his form has dipped since; in his subsequent 11 matches, he has managed 481 runs at an average of 30.00. Excluding his 82 against Zimbabwe in the last innings, that average falls to 26.60 during the period of his slump.
Senuran Muthusamy, the player of the series against Pakistan, makes up South Africa’s spin contingent along with Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer. In the pace attack, Kagiso Rabada, Corbin Bosch, and Marco Jansen have been included, with Wiaan Mulder for company.
The first Test will be played in Kolkata from November 14. The teams will then move to Guwahati for the second Test from November 22. The tour will also include three ODIs and five T20Is.
