Fanny Utagushimaninde breaks two world records on T20I debut

The teenage opener, at 15 years and 223 days, became the youngest batter across genders to score a T20I century. She also became the first-ever woman to hit a ton on debut. Australia’s Karen Rolton previously held the record for the top WT20I score on debut, scoring 96* in Australia's first-ever match in the format.

Opening the batting for Rwanda against Ghana at the Nigeria Invitational Women's T20I Tournament, Utagushimaninde scored 111 runs off 65 deliveries, including 17 boundaries, to take her team to a strong total of 210-3. Merveille Uwase was the side’s second top-scorer with 32.

Ghana, in reply, could only get to 88-8 by the end of 20 overs, losing by 122 runs. Belise Murekatete picked up three wickets for Rwanda, while there were three run-outs in the innings as well.

Utagushimaninde will next be in action when Rwanda take on the Zimbabwe women’s under-19 side in their second match of the tournament. Nigeria and South Africa U19 are the two other sides in the five-team competition.
