Jonathan van Lange

Jonathan van Lange scored his third consecutive Youth ODI fifty to help West Indies U19s beat their English counterparts.

Four fifties in eight innings

Van Lange started his Youth ODI career with a 94-ball 83 to help West Indies defeat the Sri Lanka U19s at Coolidge earlier this year. Playing in six of the seven games of the series, van Lange finished with 211 runs at 42.20 and a strike rate of 84, rounding off the series with a 43-ball 50 with a four and four sixes.

That was in August and September. When the England U19s came over in November, van Lange began the series with a 50-ball 52 at St George’s. Chasing 243, the hosts were 105-4 when he joined captain Joshua Dorne and helped him put on 117 for the fifth wicket, virtually sealing the chase.

Three days later at the same venue, the England U19s were 160-5 in 31.4 overs when rain halted play. When the match resumed, West Indies’ target was set at 191 in 31 overs. Walking out at 98-3 in the 21st over, van Lange smashed three fours and five sixes in an unbeaten 34-ball 57 to complete the chase in the final over.

From eight games, van Lange’s Youth ODI career stands at 320 runs at 53.33 with a strike rate of 96. For the West Indies, no one has scored as many runs in the format at a better average and a better strike rate (though it must be mentioned that balls-faced data is not available for some matches).

      Not just cricket

Van Lange’s career is not restricted to cricket (or studying at the University of Guyana). He juggles both with table tennis, where he won the national men’s doubles with Shemar Britton as recently as this September.

And yet, Jonathan might not even be the best athlete in the family. His sister Britany represented Guyana in women’s 100m freestyle swimming in the 2012 London Olympics.
