Sam Curran picked up his third T20 hat-trick in the opening match of the ongoing series against Sri Lanka on Friday (January 30).
Sam Curran takes third hat-trick of T20 career
The England all-rounder took three wickets on the trot, dismissing Dasun Shanaka, Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana to reduce Sri Lanka to 129-9 in a rain-shortened game that the visitors won by 11 runs (DLS method). He finished with figures of 3-38 in three overs.
Sri Lanka were bowled out for 133 in a 17-over game, while England finished their innings at 125-4 in 15 overs, 11 ahead of the par DLS score at the stage, before rain stopped proceedings. Phil Salt (46 off 35) and Tom Banton (29 off 15) starred with the bat, while Adil Rashid was named Player of the Match for returning figures of 3-19.
Notably, this was Curran’s third T20 hat-trick. His first came against the Delhi Capitals for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in IPL 2019, when he dismissed Harshal Patel on the last ball of the 18th over before removing Kagiso Rabada and Sandeep Lamichhane on the first two deliveries of the 20th.
He also bagged one for the Oval Invincibles against the London Spirit in The Hundred 2024, when he first scored a fifty, then sent Liam Dawson, Olly Stone and Andre Russell packing on consecutive deliveries.
Curran joins seven other bowlers who have picked up three hat-tricks in their respective T20 careers, while Rashid Khan sits atop the list with four such instances. He is also the first England bowler to take three hat-tricks in the format.
