Just moments after he’d dismissed David Warner in his opening over by inducing the outside edge, Woakes was called into action at mid-on – and responded in spectacular style.
Smith looked to pull a delivery wide of off stump bowled by Chris Jordan but struggled to find the right connection; instead, a top-edge flew high and Woakes back-pedaled before leaping high to hold on with his right hand.
The wickets kept on tumbling thereafter for Australia in a dream start for England: Woakes trapped Glenn Maxwell lbw in the fourth over of the innings before Adil Rashid accounted for Marcus Stoinis at the start of the seventh to leave the batting side 21-4.
