After his side wrapped a comfortable seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first Test at Galle, Joe Root made sure to thank Rob Lewis, the England fan who had waited ever so patiently for this series.
Lewis flew out from England to Sri Lanka last March for the side’s two-match series, but it was on his flight there when it was announced that the series had been called off due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Instead of returning home, he vowed to stay in the country until England returned for their series. Ten months on he was able to watch England’s march to victory from the Galle Fort that overlooks the ground.
England’s Test captain and double centurion in the match rang Lewis to thank him for his support.
