Sri Lanka won the first Test late on day five in an exciting finish. Zimbabwe fought hard, putting up 350 in the first innings, but Angelo Mathews’ maiden Test double century left Suranga Lakmal and the rest enough time to overcome the hosts’ resistance on the final day and set up a small chase.
Zimbabwe made two changes for the second Test, with Kyle Jarvis out injured and Ainsley Ndlovu having gone wicketless for 108 off his 28 overs. Carl Mumba and Tinotenda Mutombodzi came in for them. For Sri Lanka, Vishwa Fernando came in for Kasun Rajitha.
The home team had three debutants in the first Test. Kevin Kasuza, Ainsley Ndlovu and Victor Nyauchi. The tourists controversially left out Kusal Perera, whose 153* against South Africa less than a year ago was awarded the joint No.1 position in Wisden’s men’s Test innings of 2019.
Sean Williams captains Zimbabwe, while Dimuth Karunaratne leads Sri Lanka.
