R Ashwin in TNPL 2025

R Ashwin, leading Dindigul Dragons in TNPL 2025, lashed out at an on-field umpire after being controversially given lbw during Sunday’s (June 8) match against Tiruppur Tamizhans.

The incident occurred in the fifth over of Dindigul Dragons' innings. Batting on 18 as an opener, Ashwin attempted to sweep his counterpart and left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore – bowling from over the wicket – but missed. As the ball trickled toward fine leg, he set off for a single. Though the delivery appeared to pitch outside leg, umpire Venkatesan Krthika raised her finger, dismissing him lbw.

With his team having already burned two reviews for wides in the first over itself, Ashwin was left with no DRS to go upstairs.

He engaged in an argument with the umpire, but the latter paid no heed. "Ashwin is saying 'he has bowled this from over the stumps, ma’am', arguing his case that it was pitched well outside leg stump," said one of the commentators describing the incident.

Ashwin’s brief 11-ball innings, featuring two fours, ended contentiously, leaving him furious with the decision. He was seen smashing his pad with the bat in anger as he stormed off to the dressing room.

The Dragons slipped from 39 in 4.4 overs to 93 all out in 16.2 overs. Though Esakkimuthu A picked up 4-26, Sai Kishore (2-10) was the most disciplined among the Tiruppur Tamizhans bowlers. Tiruppur made light work of the target, gunning it down in 11.5 overs with nine wickets remaining. Tushar Raheja top-scored with a 39-ball 65 not out.

Promoting himself to open the innings, he scored 252 runs at an average of 36.00 and a strike-rate of 151.80, including three fifties. He also took nine wickets at an economy of just 6.92 while maintaining an average of 27.55. So far, the title-holders have won one of their two matches, and Ashwin will hope to replicate last year’s form to bolster his team’s title defence.
