Erwee debuted for South Africa in February 2022 and his career got off to an excellent start as he scored a maiden Test century in just his second game against New Zealand.
He would make 73 against England at Lord’s in the summer but since that score he has had a rough time of it and averaged 13.77 in the five Tests that he has played since.
In this series he has averaged exactly 14.00 with a high score of 21 in what has been an extremely difficult series for the South Africans.
On day four, the tourists came out to bat for the first time in the Test after rain had severely impacted play. Australia started the day by declaring on 475-4 which left them with 157 overs to attempt to bowl South Africa out twice.
Captain Dean Elgar, who earlier survived a borderline third umpire call after a fantastic non-catch from Steve Smith at slip, was the first to go when he was caught behind off a brute of a short-ball from Josh Hazlewood. Before Erwee, who had looked good for his 18, was next out however as he left a quick delivery from Lyon that turned far less than the left-hander expected and kissed his off stump.
