South Africa struck twice inside the first three overs to remove Pratika Rawal and Harleen Deol, before Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur counter-attacked with 28 off 20. Once she departed though, it was 50-3.

Smriti Mandhana (51) then rebuilt the innings with Jemimah Rodrigues, who went on to score a sublime 123, off 101 balls. Deepti Sharma contributed 93, including a 122-run stand for the fifth wicket with Rodrigues, and India managed 337-9.

In reply, South Africa were always behind the rate even as Tazmin Brits (26) and debutant Miane Smit (39) got off to starts. Annerie Dercksen, promoted to No.4, kept things ticking with 81 off 80, and the lower-order began to accelerate.

Tryon, coming in at 188-5 in 38.1 overs, kept her side alive with a swashbuckling 67 off 43, studded with five sixes. But there was too much to do in the end, as South Africa eventually fell 23 runs short. Amanjot Kaur was the pick of the bowlers, with 3-59.

The win has helped India retain their strong hold on top spot in the table. This loss, however, has ended South Africa's already-slim hopes of qualifying for the final. In the final group game against Sri Lanka, the best they can hope for is a consolation victory.
