At 18 years 193 days, Cummins was the youngest Australian to play Test cricket when he debuted at Johannesburg in 2011/12. He claimed seven wickets and hit the winning runs to seal a two-wicket triumph. Australia levelled the two-Test series 1-1 – a much-needed result after they had been bowled out for 47 in the first Test.

Injuries prevented Cummins from playing another Test match for more than five years. He returned against India at Ranchi in early 2017, and took off from where he had left, with 12 wickets in three Tests. By 2021, he was leading Australia in Test cricket – no mean feat for someone whose primary role is to bowl fast.

Until May 8, 2025, Cummins has 294 wickets at 22.43 from 67 Test matches. In the history of Test cricket, only seven bowlers have more wickets in the format at a better average. Of them, Glenn McGrath is the only Australian.
