Root stepped down as England Test captain after they lost 0-1 in the West Indies in 2022, after a phase where his team won one Test match out of 17. He had led in 64 Tests – an England record – until that point. He was succeeded by Ben Stokes.

A last-wicket stand of 90 propped England to 204 in the first innings of Root’s last Test match as captain, at the National Stadium in St George’s, Grenada. Their No.10 and No.11 scored 41 and 49 respectively. The hosts then became 128-7 before their wicketkeeper scored exactly 100 to lift them to 297. England now folded for 120 as a West Indian all-rounder returned figures of 17-9-18-5. The hosts won the Test by 10 wickets.
