Not only had the West Indies won the first two editions of the Men’s World Cup, in 1975 and 1979, but they had also not lost a single game en route. India, on the other hand, had won one game across the two editions – against East Africa. In 1983, too, the West Indies topped the group stage – though India recovered well from consecutive defeats to make it to the final.

All seemed lost when India were bowled out for a mere 183 in the final. The West Indies then recovered from an early wicket to cruise to 50-1, but the Indian fast bowlers struck in quick succession to reduce them to 76-6. The seventh wicket put on another 43, but once that stand broke, the tail caved in – and Indian cricket changed forever.
