Australia played in the first ever ODI, against England at MCG in 1971, after an Ashes Test match was washed out. An Australian all-time great Test batter and their incumbent Test captain, led them for the only time in ODIs. In Australia, ODIs were extremely popular in the 1980s, when every summer was marked by the traditional triangular tournament.
