A couple of weeks into the first ever IPL, in 2008, the organising committee announced a reward for the leading run-scorer of every ongoing edition. Shortly afterwards, they named a corresponding award for the leading wicket-taker as well. The colours for these caps – Orange and Purple – were chosen for a reason: they did not appear on the shirts of the eight teams. That was lost soon, when the Kolkata Knight Riders changed their shirt from black to purple in 2010, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad picked orange as their colour.

An Australian has won the Orange Cap thrice (over a five-year span), the most. He is followed by a West Indian and an Indian, who have won it twice each. While no one has won three Purple Caps, a West Indian and two Indians have won the Purple Cap twice each. One of the two Indians has even won it while playing for two different franchises, while the other won it in consecutive editions.
