WG Grace and AP “Bunny” Lucas put on the first century partnership in Test cricket history: 120 for the third wicket for England against Australia in the first Test match on English soil, at The Oval in 1880.

Four years later at the same venue, Billy Murdoch and “Tup” Scott returned the favour on Australia’s behalf, adding 207 for the third wicket – the first ever double-hundred stand.

It was not until 1911/12 that two giants – Jack Hobbs and Wilfred Rhodes – put on 323 (the first triple-century partnership) at Melbourne. This, too, came in an Ashes Test match, just like the first 400-plus stand. Two Australian run-machines did that in 1934 – yet again, at The Oval.
