Four years after the first Twenty20 match was played, in England in 2003, hosts South Africa and the West Indies faced off in the first ever World Cup in the format. A West Indian lit up the contest with a characteristic swashbuckling hundred, which was also the first in the format at international level. The West Indies lost the match, but the innings set the tone for things to come.
